Cd cover Pratice and Photoshop Pratice.

Here is an example of my groups first attempt at a CD digipack. We have tried to follow the conventions of the other CD packs that we have looked at. We created this on photoshop, and used an example of what our Artist could be called, in this case Blake.

The background and green/blue coulour over "Blake" means that Blake is not standing out so much against the background. We chose green as we felt it went with the 'earthy' conventions of a indie-rock music video.

The font on the front of the album cover we have made stand out more by putting a white glow on the text, this makes the name of the artist and of the album much more obvious, however, this seems to stand out more than the artist and because the artist has had a wash over, however this may not be a good idea to do this again on the final outcome.

The font on the  back of the digipack has been made bold and this although not as forward as the text on the front of the pack it still stands out. The use of the bar code and recording label makes the digipack seam more realistic. This also looks more realistic as we have used a recording label that we have looked at and know does release our genre of music.  

Here is an example of some of the things that you can do on photoshop. Here I have changed the filter and and added a blur. This creates confusuion and makes the image unable to be clear to the audience to what it is.  This was our first attempt at using photoshop.

Green Screen Pratice.

 

Above is my groups first attempts at using a green screen, in doing this it has improved and made me gain more technical skills. A green screen is used in order create background effects in a music video, as you can see in ours it has been used to create a 'dancefloor' look.

I learnt many things whilst using the green screen. The green screen has to be strait and flat in order for their to be less shadows on the piece of work. I also learnt that when there are shadows on the greenscreen it is harder to remove in after effects as there are different shades of green.

When using final cut we used, Effects - video filters - key - chroma keyer is then dragged onto the clip. When  creating  our music video if we  decide to use the green screen in order to make our music video better I think we would have to have more pratice and become more confident in using the green screen, I also feel we would have to make sure that the lip syncing is would have to be more exact.

I will be in charge of location, make up and hair, and will aslo act in the video if it is appropriate to the song.

Mind Map Of Initial Ideas.

Here is a mind map of my groups initial idea's. This will help give my group an idea of what would work well in my music video.

Genre: Indie Rock.

Locations: We had three ideas for possible locations, however after waying up the pros and cons of each location, I feel it would be better to use the street as a location, for example like in Little By little by oasis, this I feel has more of an attraction to an audience than a stage or studio, however cross cutting I think of all three would be the best way to accomodate all conventions of this music video.

Lighting: Low key lighting is a convention that through my research I have found in every other indie rock video, this would mean that it is a key convention to our video.

Costumes: Although costumes have been different in each video, the general feel to the clothes are smart/ casual. The costume we decide on will have to fit the style of song, and what narrative (if one) is in the video.

Artists: Out of the selected artists our chosen artist is going to be Miles Kane, we decided on him as he fits the style of Indie rock that we feel will fit our genre.

Props: Main props of the video will be the instruments to the video, this is one of the main convention to indie rock videos.

Audience Research 2

Analysis of results from questionnaire carried out on Google Docs.

Out of the 22 people that answered my groups questionaire 74% of them were females. This could mean that the type of audience that indie-rock music attracts is dominated by women.

18 out of the 22 people that were asked we 17-19, this gives my group a good idea of the kind of audience that we are marketing to.

 

 

As majority of the people who answered the questionaire said indie-rock was the favourite genre, this has ment that it the rest of the answers to the questions below will have greater meaning and will be a greater help in following the conventions my group will need in order to be successful.

 

The answers in this questio have been a great help in order of understanding the most successful way of advertising. With air-play being the greatest influence out of these options, this has ment that first air-play will be important, however youtube will also work well as it is the second highest way of hearing new music. This will help my group when the advertisement stages begin.

 

 

This questions shows greatly the influence iTunes ect. has when purchasing music, again these results have ment that when the music does go on sale, what is the biggest influence on the marketing for purchasing music.

 

 

 

The results to this question will greatly help when dealing with the editing and shots used in the video. The conclusions I draw from this question is that their may be need for cross cutting within the video, this would mean cross cutting of a story, and where it is purley the band, however this can be seen as a convention of many indie rock videos.

 

 

 

 

 The answers to this question although close, a image of the artist or band seem to be predominatly the most popular image to have on the front of a CD cover. This means that my group will use a image of the group or artist on the front of the cover.

This question has also helped my group decide that when coming to the advertising having it simalar to the CD is often the most successful.

 

 

 

Post 19 Audience Research 1.

This is the survey I created in order to research into our genre on Google Docs.







Me and my group created this survey on Google docs, this represents the target age group, demographics and  their likes and dislikes in a music video, advertisements and CD covers.

We expected to see a difference in the gender demographic, however most of the age range to consist of 17-19 year olds with some being in the 24+ group as we have sent some to teachers .We hope to see some detail and give descriptive ideas of what they would like to see on advertisements, covers and what they like to see in a video. We are hoping that if there answers are helpful that they will help us in creating a Indie rock music video that caters to the needs and desires of the target audience.

Conventions of a Indie Rock music video.

The colours used in the songs are often used to set the mood for the song for example in chelsea dagger, te song being about a burlesque dancer the video sets the scene with that with the dark and then the spotlight almost sets the scene and then gives the video a burlesque feel.

Costume:

 This is a great example of a band shot and indie clothing, this shot from an Oasis video.

Low key lighting.

Analysis of Indie Rock video.

The begging two shots show a mid shot of a black kitten heel and a white burlesque dancer glove, these teasers at the begging of the video are hiding the character from us. Chelsea Dagger is about a burlesque dancer called Chelsea, this makes the audience assume that this could be Chelsea. This is also an example of the phantasmagorical body, this is a theory first put forward by Carol Vernailis, this is when parts of the body are shown and this makes us piece together a body and this is then called the phantasmagorical body.

This mid close up is a mid shot of the drummer on sage when a spotlight, showing the drummer and the red background. With this shot the audience get the idea of sitting in the audience and watching the show. The red background and spotlight has been done to create a burlesque type shot.

As the guitar starts to come into the song, keeping with the mid close up, another spotlight is then added on, again this is reinforcing the idea of watching a show. This creates a good effect.

Unlike in the other videos, the colour is sepia, this however suits with the begging of the song, the slow pace and smooth begging to the song. This shot is also unusual, the mid shot of the score sheets blowing across the ground, also give the viewer an idea of how deserted the place they are in are. 

This is the first shot we see of the lead singer of Kasabian, this close up show us the scraggy look that he has taken on. You can also see that this shot is using a refelction of the lead singer, this again is showing how deserted the place they are must be.

As the song begins to kick in, the shot coulours turn to black and white and it begins to look like CCTV footage, you can tell this from the angle and position. This shows the band robbing a bank, unlike the other videos I have annotated this one seems to be telling a story instead of having shots of the band playing. This means that this video may be unconventional to the others I have looked at.

The Kaiser Cheifs video to Ruby begins with a extreme long shot of the band in a deserted place, this is establishing the band to the audience. Most videos do this so that they are instantly recognisable.

Again a close up of the lead singer. The shot is often conventional to indie rock videos. The earthy colours are also often conventional to indie rock videos, as they are often greys, greens and balcks.

The  mid shot of the drums, show the drummer playing them, this could mean that the drums are a big part of the song.

The shot of Oasis in the car gives a very cramped look to the shot, this could be used as an establishing shot, this can be done in many music videos to show the band, with the lead singer sitting at the front of the group, this could also be used to show importance within the group.

This close up shot is seen as the singing begins, this shot of Noel Gallagher is common in rock indie videos of a shot of the lead singer as the singing begins

Like in the chelsea dagger video a provocatively dressed woman wearing black clothes and against a red background, this could represent them being on a stage again. Like in the chelsea dagger this shot of the woman dancing is shown throughout the video.

A shot of the band on stage with one single spotlight is also like the chelsea dagger video, this shot shows that they are on stage and makes them stand out agains the dark background. They are dressed in black suits and are dressed smartly and appropriatly for the video.

As the chorus begins, this shot of the guitar is shown, the close up show the style of guitar they have and this kind of guitar may go with the style of music that the band are playing. This shot works well as you can see the spotlight shining on the guitar showing the prescise detail.

In my mood board I have included, props, costumes, bands and album covers for some of the bands that are in my genre. Looking at these bands will help with us knowing the sorts of things to put in our music video.

Low budget videos

I watched low budget videos, this is helpful to understand what a A piece of work looks like and the standard that the video has to be. In the video A2 Music Video - A-ha! Imogen Heap, they use many different high standards and quick paced effects. This works well for them as with the fast tempo of the song. This and the exciting editing makes it hard for the viewer to take their eyes off of the screne. The locations and props also suit the genre of music video this being said the effects they have also put on also works well with this genre.





Although this second video is very different to the first low budget one I have annalysed, this video, in contrast to A-HA  the video uses slower editing and a lack of colour as the video is in black and white. This video also tells a story whereas the first vdeo does not. However they both use a range of shots and this is used well through out the video. Although it is not done to as higher standard as the first video because of the lesser effects, the video is also not in sync. This is confusing for the audience and cuts in the song are not correctly placed as they do not go with the beat of the song unlike in A HA. The fact that the editing is not in the correct placing means that the music video does not make complete sense.
